The Tally is operated from Ireland (data controller contact: vote@thetally.eu) while its planned independent nonprofit entity is being incorporated. This page will name that entity when it exists.
Radar & alerts: your email address and the topics you chose — so we can send you what you asked for. One-click unsubscribe is in every email, or write to us.
Country waitlist: your email and the country you were visiting from, so we can tell you when The Tally launches there.
Vote verification: your email, briefly, to send a verification code; and afterwards a one-way hashed marker per legislation file that says "this address has voted on this file" — used only to enforce one person, one vote. Verification rows are consumed on use and purged.
Your ballot: stored with no personal data at all. The vote is authorized by an anonymous single-use cryptographic token that our own systems cannot connect to your email. We could not reveal your vote under subpoena, because the link does not exist.
Support payments: processed entirely by Stripe; we receive amounts and status, never card details. The public funding ledger shows amounts and categories only — never a supporter's name or details.
On your device only: your chosen constituency and a "you've voted on this file" flag live in your browser's local storage. They are never transmitted to us.
Server logs: our hosting provider (Vercel, Dublin region) keeps short-lived technical logs (IP, request path) for security and reliability.
We use Microsoft Clarity to understand where the site confuses people — which buttons get missed, where pages fail on mobile. It records anonymised usage patterns, heatmaps and session replays, and Microsoft processes this data under its own privacy terms (Microsoft Privacy Statement).
Three limits we hold: (1) Consent first. Clarity loads only after you click OK on the analytics banner; decline and it never loads. Your choice is stored on your device only. (2) Never on voting pages. Legislation pages — where you cast your tally — carry no analytics at all, so no session replay can ever capture a voting journey. (3) Product improvement only. Analytics data is never joined to your email, your ballot, or anything else we hold.
To change your choice, clear this site's data in your browser — the banner will ask again on your next visit.
No advertising trackers. No sale of personal data — at any price, to anyone, ever. No profiling of individuals.
You can request access, correction, deletion, or export of your personal data, and object to or restrict processing, by emailing vote@thetally.eu. Note one honest limit: we cannot show or delete "your vote," because we genuinely cannot identify which vote is yours. You may also lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie).
Expired verification codes: purged within a day. Subscriber records: until you unsubscribe (then retained only as an unsubscribed marker so we never email you again) or on request, deleted entirely. Ballots and tallies: permanent, because they contain no personal data — they are the public record this site exists to keep.
